“When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, may luck be yours on Halloween.”
Welcome to my Halloween post .This wonderful time of the year finally came around. Halloween is one of the most beloved holidays for kids. In this post i am going to suggest some creative activities for teachers and parents.
Learning about Halloween and creating a tradition
First things first, it is really important for the kids to learn what Halloween actually is, to learn about the history and the traditions of this holiday. Ask your students or your kids what they think Halloween is and what do we do on Halloween. Collect their answers in a board and then ask them if they want to learn more about this holliday and how they can find more informations about it.
If you are a teacher you can separate your kids into small groups. Each group could have a responsibility, e.g. group A is responsible to search what we do on Halloween and group B could search the origins of Halloween. A third group could search old Halloween traditions. A very important step is to let children choose from which source they will receive their information. Some may search the internet while others may search on Halloween books you "accidentally" left around the classroom.
In the end, the groups should present at the classroom their findings. We congratulate them for their work and we ask them to express what they liked the most from what they found in a drawing. After that we gather all of our drawings and we create a Halloween Book of Traditions. We can try to apply all of our traditions in the classroom or in our houses.
Costumes
Halloween is all about candies and costumes. Costumes are something fun and personal. We can discuss with kids if there is a certain theme they want or if not what kind of costumes they would like to have. Then, each kid could make its own costume with recycled materials. I found some great examples on pinterest.

Telling and playing a story
Together with the children we can create our own story for Halloween with the help of story cards. Each child can draw or paint either a character or an incident related to Halloween. We collect all the cards and decide what the plot of our story will be like. Then, since our story has a beginning, a middle and an end, the children can put on a show. If the class consists of several children, we can divide them into two groups and the first group can present its play to the second and vice versa.
Treats
As mentioned above Halloween is all about the sweets and treats. But how much sugar can a kid take? I think it is a perfect time to discuss with our students or our kids about candies and sugar. We can talk about what is healthy and what is not and we can search healthier versions of our favourite sweets and make them in our class or at home. Here is my favourite healthy snickers recipe:

Wish you a spooky Halloween 🎃
